meditating on Friendship while thinking of agnes Martin’s The Islands
This work was on view AUG 26-28th, Orilla Verde Campground, Rio Grande Gorge State Park, Site #4
Rocks were taken from the surrounding campsite and adjacent Rio Grande river to recreate Agnes Martin’s painting Friendship. The stones were arranged while meditating on intimacy, order, and the stories that emerge when a combination is introduced. After a week, they drove up out of the canyon to get cell service again, and when they looked up the Agnes Martin painting, it wasn’t called Friendship (1963), it was called The Islands (1961).
If you have a location where you would like to host “Meditating on Friendship While Thinking of Agnes Martin’s The Islands,” send an email. The work can be recreated anywhere that has rocks nearby and a sort of clearing or slab.
